For many years
now, a question of identity has repeatedly arisen out of my art-making
process. Namely an oscillating ‘splitting of self’ and
a ‘merging of self/others’; my practice is a continuing
investigation into my motivation for this desire, but also a concern
for how this is mediated. My concerns are explored through the lens
of the mechanisms of ‘new media’ technologies which mediate
and catalyse our actions into experience.
I have developed a method of working which consists of programming
software/writing code to alter the conventional way one is represented
by the ‘live’ video camera. I use the video camera as
the primary interface as it is no more difficult than looking in the
mirror; essentially the body becomes the affordance (the way objects
act as agents for our actions). As this medium is portable, considerations
of site are also of significant importance to the experience (inclusive
of the place, space, time, body, object/subject, media, context, architecture).
This process is material from which to explore the interaction between
represented self as artist, object /subject and material; leading
towards other modes of presentation and new arenas. |
